Introducing the Home Office
Beginning this month we are going to start reformatting the Pet Consultant of the month. But we also want to take some time to let you get to know the home office. Introducing Kristina Meyer...
Kristina Meyer grew up in Amarillo, Texas. There were always numerous pets in her house, including dogs, cats and many aquariums. She went to Valparaiso University in Indiana. While looking for an internship, Kristina stumbled upon Shure Pets and thought that it would be a perfect fit for her. She started her internship in March of 2004. Not long after her internship ended, Kristina got a call that there was a position open at Shure Pets. "I was so happy to get that call because Shure Pets was the job that I wanted. During my internship I grew to love all of the consultants that I dealt with and felt passionately that this was a company that could go great places." Kristina has a Maine Coon cat, Socrates, and a water bound frog, Prince.
She looks forward to working with all of the Pet Consultants to help make their businesses a success. Please don't hesitate to email (kristina.meyer@shurepets.com) or call her with any of your questions or concerns. |

Pick of the Pound: Rottweiler
The Rottweiler, more affectionately known as the Rottie is one of the many breeds that have unfairly gotten a bad reputation over the past decade. Due to their size and strength, this breed is commonly referred to as a Bully Breed, which is as unfair as judging a muscular human as a bully just because of their size.
The Rottie is a large breed with the males ranging from about 24-27 inches at the shoulder and females from 22-25 inches. The weight can range anywhere from 80-110+ pounds. Their colors are very distinctive; always black with mahogany/rust colored markings. While Rottie's do have a short coat, they do shed and often blow their entire coat twice a year. Of course, with regular baths and daily brushing the shedding can be minimized.
Most importantly though is the Rottweiler's temperament. A correctly trained Rottie can be a great companion. Rottweilers as a whole have been unfairly judged due to improper training and lack of attention, and affection. Not to be misunderstood, these are very strong animals, both physically and mentally, and training is a must. These dogs are dominant by nature, and will need proper training in order to obey and respect their human family. The Rottie will think they are the leader of the pack and can be pushy with their owners if they are not taught their place in "the pack". With proper care and training, this breed is nothing to fear, and most Rottie owners will testify that their pet is a big teddy bear. Rotties are very intelligent and will do very well in training. They are often used as search and rescue dogs and police dogs.
Rottweilers make great family pets and are very loyal and dedicated to their families, which in turn also makes them a good watch dog. On that note, Rottweilers should not be used solely as a guard dog because they do need love, affection, and attention and are not suitable to spend their lives only as a guard.
Rotties are an active breed that will need regular exercise and play time. They are always grateful for a long walk or a brisk jog. Combining the right amount of daily exercise, play, and attention is vital to having a calm relaxed Rottie when indoors. After a fun-filled day, most Rottweilers are content chewing a bone and resting.
It is also very important to socialize a Rottie with other animals and strangers. Rottweilers need to be exposed to many friendly people and pets so they learn to recognize the behavior of "the good guys". Without proper socialization, they may be suspicious of everybody, which can lead to aggressive behavior. I, along with many others feel that Rotties have a tainted reputation that is unfair and can hopefully be turned around in the near future. If a Rottweiler sounds like a dog you would like to learn more information about there are various websites dedicated to this wonderful breed. After research if you decide that a Rottweiler would be a good pet for you, there are thousands in shelters across the country looking for homes. There are also many Rottweiler specific shelters and rescues (one of our own consultants Diane S. from Raleigh, NC founded the North Carolina Rottweiler Rescue!) that would love to pair you with a wonderful Rottweiler. If a breeder is the route you choose, make sure to do research on the breeder to ensure they are reputable.
As for all dogs, but especially for breeds such as the Rottweiler it needs to be remembered that behavior is learned. Bad owners make bad dogs, not the other way around!
Thanks to Diane S. (#532, Raleigh, NC) for the Rottweiler suggestion!
As always, please e-mail any breed suggestions for Pick of the Pound to Halie at Halie.Williams@shurepets.com

Purr-fect Pet Health Tips Just because chilly weather will be approaching soon, does not mean you and your pet should be any less active! A recent survey reported that 40% of pets are overweight. Obesity and diabetes in pets is a rising problem in the United States and results in many health problems for our beloved friends.
Our pets need us for many things, exercise included. Make sure to still walk and play with your dogs daily to ensure no winter weight gain. Also be sure not to overfeed dogs or give them excessive treats. They might beg now, but they will be thanking you later!
Much of this advice goes for our feline friends as well. Make sure to provide your kitty with plenty of entertainment and watch their food intake.
Keep these facts in mind: 1 extra pound on a Chihuahua is equal to a women gaining 38 pounds and a 10 pound cat drinking 1 cup of milk is equal to a human eating 5 chocolate bars. Pet obesity is a serious health risk and should be properly treated.
As always, your veterinarian would be able to give the best advice on how to maintain your pet's weight, or how to help your pet lose unwanted pounds.

"Barks of Approval"
Testimonials

"Hi everyone, I just wanted to let you know that I received one of our business card holders tonight and it looks great. The picture in the book does no justice. It's a lot bigger then it looks. The picture is nice and clear. This makes a great gift for someone! I recommend it!"-Frances G. (#2314, Rosedale, MD)
"I recently held a Shure Pets booth at a local fair. A couple came to me stating that their Boston Terrier Bogie was an avid chewer and was destroying every toy he had. I suggested the small Hurley, but they were hesitant and didn't feel it would be strong enough. I gave it to him and he chewed on it for fifteen minutes while his owners were checking out the booth. He couldn't part with the toy or destroy it and his owners were very impressed. Thanks for such wonder-"fur" products that sell themselves!" - Rose H. (#2559, Mc Millan, MI)

Bone-us Trivia
September's Question: How many muscles do cats have to control their outer ear?
Please email info@shurepets.com with your trivia answer. A winner will be selected at random from all correct responses to receive FREE Shure Pets Products! The correct answer to this issue's Bone-us Trivia will be printed in next month's Pet Gazette.
The August trivia question was: Chewbacca, the hairy Wookiee in the Star Wars movies, was inspired by George Lucas' what? Although we had many responses, Linda H. (Stone Mountain, GA #2583) was the selected winner with the correct response of his dog Indiana, an Alaskan Malamute and received a special Shure Pets prize. Good luck to everyone participating in September's trivia contest!
